Teaching of Writing in Secondary Schools
According to the National Writing Project,
Writing is essential to learning, critical thinking, and active citizenship. Writing is the currency of the new workplace and global economy, but more importantly, writing helps us clarify ideas, solve problems, and understand ourselves and our changing world. With writing, we each can leave our mark on the world today and reach toward the future.
Evidence-based Practices
In the What Works Clearinghouse practice guide and webinar, writing experts explain how teachers can explicitly teach writing strategies, emphasize key writing features when reading, provide feedback on student writing, and use assessments of student writing to inform instruction.
Creating a Culture of Writing
One way to create a culture of writing is to begin each class with writing.
A second way is to have students write for and share with an authentic audience (outside of the teacher).
A third way is to join a national project so that students can be part of something bigger.
